Torex sale features trio of 'No. 1' notes

Three ultra-rare serial number 000001 Canadian banknotes will be featured in Moore's Oct. 26-28 public auction in Toronto.

The three notes are:

  • A Dominion of Canada $1, March 31, 1898, signed Boville, serial No. 000001/D, Series L;
  • A Dominion of Canada $4, July 2, 1900, signed Courtney, serial No. 000001/B, Series A;
  • A Merchants Bank of Canada $5, Nov. 1, 1919, serial No. 000001/A.
  • All three notes are in excellent condition, grading Extra Fine to Almost Uncirculated or better.

    Serial number 000001 banknotes from the Dominion of Canada are some of the rarest and most highly sought after of all Canadian banknotes. The 1898 $1 note is expected to bring $40,000 to $50,000, with the other two notes expected to bring double that amount. The Merchants Bank of Canada note is accompanied by a contemporary manila envelope stating that the note was "issued to coincide with the November 1919 visit of the Prince of Wales." It is probable that the note was presented to the prince, who in 1936 was crowned King Edward VIII, says Charles Moore, president of the Walnut Creek-based auction house.

    In Moore's most recent sale, a Bank of Vancouver, $5 note, serial No. 000001, realized $172,500 in active bidding.

    The sale, which will include more than 500 lots of Canadian banknotes, will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 at the Toronto Airport Hilton Hotel, on Airport Road, adjacent to Toronto Pearson International Airport. Catalogues for the sale are available from the auctioneer for $20 at 925-946-0150 or moorecoins1921@yahoo.com.
